Cube Utilization Formula

Cube Fill (%) = (Cargo CBM / Container CBM) × 100
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m)

Industry target: 85%+ cube fill for sea freight consolidation

Why Cube Utilization Matters

Every container you ship that is less than 85% full means you are paying full freight rates for empty air. For Pakistani importers, optimising cube utilization on sea freight shipments from China, UAE, or Europe can reduce per-unit freight costs by 15-30%.

How do I improve cube fill rate?
Coordinate shipment timing to consolidate orders, order more units less frequently (check against your EOQ), work with your freight forwarder on LCL consolidation for smaller volumes, and optimise carton sizes to reduce dead air within the container.
What is the difference between weight and cube?
Freight is charged on either actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is higher. Heavy, dense cargo often hits the weight limit before the cube limit. Light, bulky cargo hits the cube limit first. This calculator focuses on cube utilization for bulky goods.
